Our team is looking forward to attending a talk on ‘The Future of Writing’, on our trip to Denver to attend the American Planning Conference in late March. This presentation poses the question of whether a planner’s writing, particularly with regard to wording in District Plans, instructions and guidelines on company and council websites, within regulations, and in consultation, is able to be understood by the audience, who are often not familiar with ‘planning’ terminology. Even as planners, we find ourselves having to occasionally double check the actual meaning of rules, policies and objectives within the Plans we use in New Zealand, and are no doubt guilty ourselves of getting carried away with our use of planning lingo! Continuing to ensure that our work outputs are accessible to their audience, concise and compelling, is an ongoing goal for our team!
