The Importance of Consultation and Having Your Say!

Laura is very pleased to see the speed signs being changed from 70km/h down to 50km/h on State Highway 73 in her little rural town of Sheffield. This speed reduction is a result of New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi undertaking consultation on speed limit reviews earlier this year, and is one of seven stretches of State Highways across Canterbury where speeds have been reduced. These speed reductions are a reflection on road improvements, changing land use and road environments, and safety concerns.

Though this may seem of an inconvenience to visitors travelling through the township, it is a change that has been very welcomed by the locals. State Highway 73 runs through the centre of the township, and is often crossed by pedestrians walking to school, and of course visitors of the Sheffield Pie Shop!

Selwyn District Council has also undertaken Community Halls engagement, where Council gave us the opportunity to provide feedback on five Community Halls via an online submission form, which has now closed. They have held numerous community meetings at the relevant community halls, where members of the public were given the opportunity to have their say, make suggestions, give input as to what they would like to see for the future of their community hall, and provide any feedback. There will be a formal consultation through the Long-Term Plan 2027-2037.

These changes show just how important it is to take part in consultation and have your say. Your local council will have details on their website of public consultations that are taking place, and when you will have the opportunity to take part in them.
